Part 1: Firefighter Mia's Busy Day
Firefighter Mia wakes up early. She puts on her big, shiny boots. She wears her bright red jacket and her funny yellow helmet. Mia smiles. “Ready for the day!” she says.
At the fire station, little Max and his dog, Bingo, come to visit. Max's eyes are round and wide. “What do firefighters do?” he asks.
Mia kneels down. “We help people. We keep everyone safe,” she says.
Max looks at the big, red fire truck. “Can I sit inside?”
“Of course!” Mia laughs. Max climbs in. Bingo wags his tail.
Mia shows Max the hoses. “These help us put out fires,” she says.
“Are fires scary?” asks Max.
“Sometimes, but we are careful. We work together and follow safety rules,” Mia says.
Max looks at the tall ladder. “How high does it go?”
Mia points up, “It goes way up to help people and cats, too!”
Bingo barks. “Woof! Woof!”
Mia laughs. “Yes, we help animals, too!”
Part 2: Questions, Questions!
Max has so many questions.
“Why do you wear a helmet?” he asks.
“To keep my head safe,” Mia smiles.
“Why is your jacket so heavy?”
“It keeps me safe from heat,” Mia answers.
Max points to a big button. “What's that for?”
“That's the siren. It goes ‘Wee-ooo! Wee-ooo!' when we hurry to help,” Mia says.
Max giggles. “Can I press it?”
“Just once,” Mia nods.
Max presses the button. The siren goes, “Wee-ooo! Wee-ooo!” Bingo jumps and wags.
Mia shows Max a big hose. “We practice a lot. We learn to use water safely,” she explains. “We don't play with fire. If we ever see smoke, we call for help.”
Max nods. “Call for help. I remember.”
Part 3: The Big Emergency Number
Before Max goes home, Mia brings out a big, bright board.
She writes with a blue marker: “In an emergency, call 911.”
Mia says, “If you see fire or danger, find a grown-up. Tell them to call 911. Firefighters will come to help.”
Max looks at the numbers. He says, “Nine-one-one. I can remember that!”
Bingo barks. “Woof!”
Mia smiles. “Good job, Max. Good job, Bingo.”
Max hugs Mia. “Thank you for keeping us safe.”
Mia hugs him back. “That's what firefighters do.”
Mia waves as Max and Bingo go home, safe and happy. The fire station is quiet. Mia feels proud, ready to help again tomorrow.
